A Greener Future

The Climate Emergency has risen up the priority agenda – particularly for the next genera-tion. Labour proposed and got support for the District Council declaring a Climate Emergency in 2019 but if you look at the website you would be forgiven for thinking it hadn’t happened. This will change under a Labour Administration.

Invest in recharging points to encourage electric car use.

If visitors who have invested in an electric car don’t believe they will find a charging point when they go shopping or eat at a restaurant or just take time visiting, they will give us a miss and spend money elsewhere.

Improve cycle parking facilities to support and encourage cyclists.

Cyclists carry their own locks but if there no racks to attach their bikes to they will be deterred from shopping or visiting locally. We want to encourage this environmentally friendly form of transport and will seek advice from cycling groups to achieve this.

Work with local schools and community groups to achieve our Climate Emergency target.

The Council has missed a number of targets – even after the councillor in charge was removed. This Conservative administration has not involved you, the community, to make real progress. Labour takes this seriously and will seek your help and work with our local schools to get to net carbon zero before 2050.

Improve the waste to be recycled by working with residents – not against them.

Recycling rates have reduced, and the blue bag introduction has been public relations disas-ter instead of a boost to recycling rates. Labour introduced kerbside collection of recycla-bles, the first district council in the County, and will do again.

We will also look at bringing back food waste recycling.

There are facilities just outside our district that we could use and so we will learn from other councils already using them with a plan to reintroduce kitchen waste caddies and reduce waste even further.
